Most doctors know paperwork eats into the OPD, but few have put a number on it. This calculator turns your clinic's own figures into hours per month, and shows what a faster system could give back in time or in consultations.

The starting values are only an example; they are not survey data. Replace them with your clinic's numbers.

#Where OPD time goes

In a paper-based OPD, the minutes that aren't spent with the patient usually go to:

  • Finding the old file, or re-taking the history when it can't be found.
  • Writing the prescription by hand, often the same medicines as last time.
  • Writing and totalling receipts, then adding them up at closing time.
  • Noting follow-ups and phoning patients who forget to come back.
  • Chasing lab reports by phone or WhatsApp, and filing the printouts.

None of these needs a doctor's judgement, which is why they are the easiest minutes to win back.

#Measure your own numbers

  1. Pick a normal day, not your busiest.
  2. For ten consecutive patients, ask your assistant to time only the paperwork: file, prescription, receipt, follow-up note.
  3. Average the ten. That is your "paperwork minutes per patient today".
  4. After a month on any new system, measure again the same way.

#How to win the time back

  • Search instead of searching shelves: an EMR finds a patient by name or mobile number in seconds.
  • Reuse prescriptions: e-prescription software repeats the last prescription so you only change what is different.
  • Let receipts write themselves: record the payment once and the receipt and daily total follow.
  • Automate follow-ups: set the date during the consultation and an SMS reminder goes out.
  • Get lab reports into the visit: order digitally and the signed report comes back to the patient's record.

Doctor OS does all of this in one clinic management system. Try it with your own clinic for ₹19 in the first month, then run the calculator again.

#FAQ

How much time does paperwork take per patient?

It varies widely between clinics and doctors, which is why the calculator asks for your own numbers. Time ten consecutive patients with a stopwatch, counting only writing, searching for files, billing and receipts, and use the average.

Does an EMR really save time?

It saves time mainly on repeat work: finding old records, rewriting the same prescriptions, adding up bills and chasing follow-ups. The first week can feel slower while you learn it, so measure again after a month.
